We also picked up a sister device to the Cobalt Qube 2. A Cobalt RAQ in disguise if you will. The Symantec Velociraptor 1100, which is I think a RAQ 3 or RAQ 4 running a AMD K6-2 (ok it turns out to be a AMD K6-III-450mhz), it is also I think the "i" version of the RAQ as it comes with two ethernet ports. (There was 3 versions of the RAQ, base RAQ, "i", with two ethernet and "r" with raid.). This has 4 ethernet (an Intel PRO/100 S server 64bit pci ethernet board) and cabling for two drives, so its an IR? I dunno if they made a standard version that was basically the "I" and "R" versions combined.
The Symantec Velociraptor was originally made by Axent before being acquired. (you can see Axent's name pop up in the boot messages below).
Initial power on, powered off. Weird. So, with power on, a watchdog was tripping immediatly and powering everything off, then timing out after about 2 seconds, causing a reboot to start back up. so it i was shutting down the moment it started up... I pulled the tiny power supply and put it under my DC load.
I could pull 5A, 6A, etc off the 5VDC line no problems... But I could get nothing from the 12v line. I couldnt see anything that was wrong on the PSU, but its a very very dense surface mount birdseed design. Snagged an apparently NOS psu on ebay for next to nothing.
(heres a look inside with its Intel PCI-X card in a PCI slot, after I upgraded the two fans to Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX fans. No noise, still runs cold!)
Dropping that in, we have boot!! (I dont know if the 1976 date is a rollover year 2000 issue, the Qube2 deffo had a y2k bios issue).

Ahum... well, this was not quite at all what I was expecting, I was thinking I was going to see an AMD K6-2-300mhz cpu but its a K6-III-450! The PCB layout matches a RAQ 3 but I didnt think the RAQ3 had K6-III's. Intriguing.
One thing to keep in mind, its not a Cobalt RAQ, its Symantec Velociraptor 1100, which was the high end rarptor (there was 500, 700, 1000 range of models). The only post I could find was a reference on servethehome forums, which I find inconclusive
"It's basically Cobalt Raq 4 (500), XTR (700) or 550 (1000)"
Which does not jibe with what is physically in front of me, as that statement says my 1100 should be based on the Cobalt 550 which is a Pentium III model, the XTR base system is also a Pentium III model.
What little information I cand find is the 1000 series had three models.
Digging deeper, I think I get it a bit more. There were three series around that time.
VelociRaptor Model 500/700/1000 VelociRaptor Model 1100/1200/1300 Symantec Gateway Security 5110/5200/5300
So maybe the info from the servethehome forum about 500/700/1000 is correct in its Cobalt model definitions, and you could extrapolate than the 1100/1200/1300 follow the RAQ 4, XTR, 550 model as well, since the 1100 is the base model in this series.
Just to confuse things, I've also read the 700 model has a socket 7 cpu, which again refutes the servethehome info... so I dont know what is correct. (I have read that the 500/700/1000/1100 were all K6 systems)....
Sooo (this is future me typing back here), the truth is the 1100 is a RAQ3.
Anyway, the two biggest problems I see in that bootup message are, the onboard intel NIC's both have invalid EEPROMS, and secondly, all four of the intel NIC's have the "Receiver lock-up" bug, which is a bug in the silicon as far as I can tell.
Not sure what I can do about that, I have a dual NIC 3COM 3C982 card, but it depends if the drivers are installed for it (they are not in the bootrom kernel), but maybe on disk in the installed OS, but I wont know until later. (The 3c982 is basically a dual 3C905c card so uses standard old 3com drivers).
So, in goes a NOS 32gb SSD from Kingston.
aaaaaaaaaaand...
hda: V100S232G , 0MB w/14736kB Cache, CHS=63/0/50
hda: INVALID GEOMETRY: 0 PHYSICAL HEADS?
aaargh sod, the linux kernel is too old to understand 0 physical heads (its actually a -1 count, so it has 1!), back then, such things didnt exist...
(which makes me wonder how the 256 SSD in the Qube2 which is older, worked...)
So IDE to SATA is a no a go. Time to try an IDE to SD adapter and see if it still has 0 heads...
(skip further down for the full failed log, and the completed install log)
Anyway, were in! restored and on the go. (Thing to note, when doing the install make sure you have your ethernet connectd to the 'inside' port, the one closest to the power supply!)
This thing is wild. When it starts up it generates a bunch of passwwords, aaaand you cant configure it beyond manually giving it an IP address and then pointing it to a windows machine... yes... you have to point it to a windows machine called the SRMC, "Symantec Raptor Management Console".
So, then I spin up a XP vm I have for messing around with and install the SRMC off the restore image (it has a nice Client software install directory).
PTSD flashbacks. Its an MMC plugin.
Yep. ALL configuration is done through here. I was expecting a suite of webpages like other Cobalt machines but no, its some java special sauce I believe, and everything is done through the MMC plugin.
Whats wild is, the restore CD installs in the year 2000, then its initial boot is smart enough to hit an NTP server and immediately says "your license expired" (because you had a 5 day trial).
This was interesting to poke at but really nothing to see and not something I need on my network. So... I flashed the RAQ3 Business Edition restore onto it (since it is just a raq 3). I might mess with flashing the XTR or 550 restore images to play with it and make it usefull.
In loading the RAQ 3 restore, there is some wild things that pop up like;
Can't exec "/Bin/rm": No such file or directory at /home/tmp/.swupdate/pkgunpack.1224/scripts/pre-install/20_InstallPatch line 5.
yeah... its case sensitive. someone should have known better or didnt test... (more than likely its irrelevant).
and why is it looking for /usr/games/.doug ??

+ [ ! -f /usr/games/.doug ]
GZDIO: 514 reads, 4204968 total bytes in 2.119 secs

I also learnt, using the raq550.iso, it lets you upgrade the ROM (from what I was on 2.3.39, I went firstly to 2.3.40, then to to 2.10.1. just make sure you select the raq3 when you choose to upgrade the rom!) and promptly reinstalled the raq550 system onto it.
If nothing else, here is the install log dump of the failed install;
